WHY LITHIUM-ION FIRES ARE SO HARD TO EXTINGUISH

Lithium-ion fires are difficult to extinguish because a small defect can quickly trigger thermal runaway: a cell overheats, releases tremendous heat, and ignites neighboring cells, creating a chain reaction within the battery pack. Flammable gases are released during reaction processes, making it impossible to simply extinguish the fire by “suffocation.” Due to the high energy density, extremely high temperatures are generated, and even if the flames temporarily disappear, hotspots may remain inside that can lead to re-ignition later. Additionally, battery packs are often encapsulated, making it hard for extinguishing agents to reach the core of the fire. Therefore, in practice, prolonged and intensive cooling is typically prioritized to bring the cells below the critical temperature and to prevent any renewed reaction.

The Fire Classes

Fire Class (EN 2)Type of FuelTypical ExamplesTypical Extinguishing Effect (short)Classification of Lithium-Ion Fires (Li-Ion)
ASolid, mostly organic materials that burn with glow formationWood, paper, textiles, furnitureCooling (mainly water), smotheringFrequently involved when surrounding materials and housings/furnishings are also burning (e.g., home, workshop).
BLiquids or liquidizing substancesGasoline, alcohol, paints, wax, many plasticsSmothering/separating, coolingFrequently involved because the electrolyte and escaping flammable substances/vapors act like Class B fires.
CGasesPropane, butane, methane, hydrogenStop gas supply, then extinguishPossible as a accompanying phenomenon (emitting flammable gases). Practically, the situation usually remains A/B plus gas release.
D/LMetalsMagnesium, sodium, potassium, lithium (metallic)Special extinguishing agents (metal powder), coveringOnly then D if elemental/metallic lithium actually burns (more rare in everyday Li-Ion batteries).
FFood oils and fatsDeep fryer, panSaponification/covering (F-extinguishers)No typical assignment to Li-Ion. Only relevant if a battery, for example, causes a grease fire in the kitchen (then considered separately).

A Class L extinguisher is a fire extinguisher that is specifically designed for fires involving lithium-ion cells and batteries. The background is that the standard ISO 3941:2026 has introduced a new fire class L to describe lithium-ion battery fires as a distinct category (because they behave and pose risks that are significantly different from traditional fire classes, such as thermal runaway and potential re-ignition). Important: In the usual fire classes according to EN 2 (A, B, C, D, F), there is no L.

Note: At VOGT-CTE, you won’t receive fire extinguishers!

We provide the essential products used to refill fire extinguishers – along with high-performance foam additives and specialty agents for modern fire protection solutions. Our materials are designed to effectively control fires, halt their spread, and deliberately reduce risks – from classic industrial applications to demanding scenarios like lithium-ion battery fires. We operate outside the end-user business, focusing instead where the difference is made: in the active ingredients, additives, and protection solutions relied upon by manufacturers, integrators, and fire safety professionals. In short: We don’t provide the shell – we deliver what works in emergencies.

LITHIUM BLACK – EFFECTIVELY PUTTING OUT LITHIUM-ION BATTERY FIRES

Lithium Black: Specialized Protection Against Lithium-Ion Battery Fires
FlameBlock Lithium Black is a specially developed solution for the rapid extinguishing of fires caused by lithium-ion batteries. Such fires behave differently from traditional fire events, as extremely high temperatures can arise inside the cells and reactions within a battery pack can spread from cell to cell. Lithium Black was specifically designed to address these unique risks as a targeted extinguishing and safety agent.

Why Lithium-Ion Fires Are So Challenging
With lithium-ion batteries, it is often not just about visible flames. Critical factors include heat, gas development, and the risk of the process continuing internally. Even if the flame is temporarily extinguished, hotspots can remain in the battery pack that may reignite later. This is why solutions are needed that don’t just work “on top” but quickly reduce temperature and sustainably stabilize the reaction.

Rapid Temperature Control for Situation Stabilization
Lithium Black is designed to very quickly reduce the temperature in the affected area. This is particularly important to prevent further spread within the battery pack and to lower the likelihood of a rekindling. Rapid temperature reduction means in practice: less escalation, more time gained, and better control for responders and operators.

Operating Principle: Neutralization, Coverage, and Protective Barrier
The formulation is based on a specific mixture of mineral components and salts. Lithium Black thus pursues multiple objectives simultaneously: it aims to actively interrupt the combustion reaction, form a protective layer over the fire source, and stabilize the fire area. This combination not only reduces the flame but also decreases the risk that the fire source inside continues to “work.”

Reduction of Rekindling
A central problem with battery fires is the potential for rekindling. Lithium Black is designed specifically to minimize this risk by cooling and shielding critical areas, and its effectiveness does not only kick in temporarily. This can significantly ease post-incident work, for example, during transport, quarantine, or the subsequent securing of the battery pack.

Safety in the Environment: Handling Fire Gases
In battery fires, dangerous and irritating gases can be generated. Lithium Black is designed as a barrier and suppression solution to make the situation more controllable and to reduce exposure in the surrounding area. It does not replace protective measures but can mitigate the overall situation and lower the risk for people and infrastructure.

Typical Areas of Application
Lithium Black is particularly suitable for areas where lithium-ion batteries are concentrated or where high energy density is present, such as in electric vehicles, battery storage, industrial applications, workshops, logistics, and charging infrastructure. In all those places where rapid responsiveness and controlled fire-fighting are crucial, a specialized solution offers a clear advantage over conventional standard extinguishers.

Added Value for Operators and Responders
The result is a solution that can stabilize battery fires more quickly, reduce collateral damage, and shorten operation times. It supports a safety concept designed for rapid control, lower escalation, and better planning, especially in environments with high asset values or critical infrastructure.

SAFE HANDLING OF BATTERIES

Charging and Charging Environment
Charge lithium-ion batteries only with appropriate original or certified chargers. Ideally, charge them on a non-flammable surface (e.g., ceramic, metal) and avoid charging unattended. Keep batteries away from direct sunlight, heaters, and hot vehicles to prevent overheating.

Avoid Overcharging and Temperature Issues
Disconnect the charger after charging and avoid continuous “trickle charging.” If the battery becomes noticeably hot, hisses, smells, or bulges, stop the charging process immediately and place the battery in a safe area (without endangering yourself).

Prevent Mechanical Damage
Never crush, drop, puncture, or excessively load batteries. Mechanical damage can cause internal short circuits leading to severe overheating and fire. Do not continue using batteries if the casing or wrapping is damaged.

Prevent Short Circuits
Never transport loose batteries together with metal items like keys, coins, or tools. Use protective caps, battery boxes, or separate compartments to prevent accidental connection of the positive and negative terminals.

Safe Storage
Store batteries in a cool, dry place away from flammable materials. For long-term storage, a medium charge state is advisable instead of being constantly fully charged or completely drained. Regularly check stored batteries for changes.

Recognizing Warning Signs Early
Watch for bulging, cracks, discoloration, leaking fluids, unusual odors, or significant heating. If you notice any of these signs, do not charge or use the battery; instead, safely separate it and dispose of it properly.

Quality and Suitable Products
Only use tested, certified batteries and the correct model for your device. Cheap or untested cells, as well as incorrect replacement batteries, significantly increase the risk. Do not alter safety circuits and do not open battery packs.

Handling Problematic Batteries
If a battery produces smoke or overheats significantly, keep your distance and ensure ventilation. If it is safe to do so, move the battery to a non-flammable area and keep it away from flammable materials. Then dispose of it properly and do not reuse it.

WHAT HAPPENS IN CASE OF FIRE

Thermal Runaway and Chain Reaction
In lithium-ion cells, a local defect (e.g., overheating, short circuit, mechanical damage) can develop into a thermal runaway. The temperature rises sharply, and the cell releases heat, which can also overheat neighboring cells. This creates a chain reaction in the battery pack that can spread very rapidly.

Self-Release of Oxygen and Gases
In the event of a fire, components of the cell decompose and release flammable gases. Some of these reactions also make oxygen available. This means: Even if there is less oxygen available from the outside, the fire can continue to be “fed” by the released gases. This complicates traditional extinguishing methods.

Very High Energy Density
Lithium-ion batteries store a lot of energy in a small space. When this energy is released uncontrollably, very high temperatures occur. This makes it easier for nearby materials to ignite, and the fire load is significantly higher than with many conventional fire sources.

Re-ignition and Hidden Hotspots
Even if the flames appear to be visibly extinguished, hotspots may remain inside the battery pack. These areas can reignite later when temperatures rise again or gases accumulate. Therefore, cooling and monitoring are often critical.

Complex Battery Pack Design
Battery packs are often encapsulated, multilayered, and mechanically protected. This is beneficial for operation, but in the event of a fire, extinguishing agents often have difficulty reaching the actual reaction zones. This prolongs the time it takes to adequately cool critical areas.

Chemical By-Products and Hazards
In a battery fire, irritating or toxic gases can be produced (e.g., from electrolyte and plastic components). Additionally, corrosive by-products can form. This complicates firefighting, increases risks for responders, and often requires special protective measures and ventilation.

Cooling Instead of “Classic Extinguishing”
In lithium-ion fires, the primary goal is often to cool the cells below the critical temperature to stop thermal runaway. This is different from many conventional fires, where smothering or separating the fuel may suffice. For batteries, the heat load is the main issue.

Large Water Volumes and Prolonged Response Times
In practice, it may be necessary to cool for an extended period because the heat resides deep within the pack, and new cells can continually react. This leads to long response times and sometimes high extinguishing agent requirements, even when visible flames have already subsided.
