The increasing prevalence of lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles, solar systems, and many electronic devices brings not only technological advancements but also new challenges in fire safety.
Fires caused by lithium-ion batteries pose unique risks, as conventional fire extinguishers designed for standard fire types are often not adequately effective.
This can delay extinguishment and significantly increase the extent of damage and danger. In response to this issue, “FlameBlock Lithium Black” is introduced as an innovative safety solution specifically developed for lithium-ion battery fires.

Battery fires are more than just “normal” fires. While a typical fire usually burns from the outside in (for example, furniture, packaging, cables), a battery can also react from the inside out. This is what makes battery incidents so unpredictable: even when the visible flames have been extinguished, a high-energy reaction may still be ongoing inside. Batteries pose several risks simultaneously:
The larger the battery system (modules, packs, storage containers), the more the focus shifts from “extinguishing the fire” to “controlling the incident.”

A fire in a production facility doesn’t just mean damage from flames—often, the biggest cost driver is the loss of revenue because the factory is shut down. It becomes particularly problematic when the production equipment could actually continue running and is even still in good working order because it wasn’t affected by the fire itself.
In practice, however, something else often brings operations to a standstill: smoke fumes. They spread throughout the entire facility in no time at all, seeping into cable ducts, control cabinets, conveyor systems, storage areas, and every nook and cranny. This fine, corrosive residue settles on surfaces, contaminates products and packaging, and can impair sensors, electronics, and pneumatic systems. Before production can resume, the factory often has to undergo extensive cleaning and decontamination testing—and that is expensive.
Even more expensive, however, is the production shutdown: delivery deadlines are missed, shifts are canceled, supply chains come under pressure, contractual penalties loom, and customers leave. In short: even if machines are functioning, smoke can slow down production for weeks—and every day of downtime usually costs significantly more than the cleanup itself.
STRATEGY 1: Extinguish quickly: The sooner the fire is stopped, the less smoke and damage there will be—and the faster production will resume.
STRATEGY 2: Controlled Flue Gas Discharge: Direct and discharge flue gas in a targeted manner to prevent it from settling throughout the factory and causing costly cleanup and downtime.
Lithium-ion batteries differ fundamentally from conventional fire loads. They are not passive materials, but rather high-energy electrochemical systems. In the event of a failure, a self-sustaining reaction can develop inside the battery.
Thermal Runaway (thermal runaway)
The primary risk associated with lithium-ion batteries is what is known as thermal runaway. This is a self-reinforcing reaction:
What makes this unique is that the system can sustain itself with heat and oxygen. Therefore, simply cutting off the outside air is often insufficient.
Chain reaction between cells
In battery modules or packs, many cells are installed in close proximity to one another. If a cell enters thermal runaway, it can heat up neighboring cells. This propagation effect leads to:
Especially in vehicle batteries or stationary storage systems, the event can last several hours.
Risk of re-ignition
A lithium-ion fire is often not over once the flames have been extinguished. Even if the surface appears calm, hotspots may still exist inside. Reignition can occur hours later. Therefore, the following tactics are required:
Highly toxic smoke gases
Lithium-ion fires produce complex and highly toxic mixtures of smoke gases. In addition to typical fire gases, additional aggressive and corrosive compounds are formed. The consequences are:
In enclosed spaces, the smoke gas problem is often more critical than the flames themselves.
LithiumBlack was developed specifically to combat lithium-ion fires. It is a complex, mineral-based formulation with a gel-like structure and special functional components. The product relies on several mechanisms of action simultaneously:
Chemical suppression of the reaction
LithiumBlack is designed to intervene in the high-energy oxidation chain. By binding reactive components, the chemical reaction is attenuated. This not only suppresses the flame but also reduces the underlying reaction dynamics.
Intensive cooling support
The formulation supports heat dissipation at the battery’s surface. The goal is to quickly bring the temperature below critical thresholds and prevent further cell reactions. The combination of cooling and chemical suppression is crucial for stopping thermal runaway.
Formation of a protective gel layer
A key feature of LithiumBlack is its gel-like structure. After application, it forms a layer-like coating on the battery surface. This layer:
Unlike pure water, the product adheres to the surface and continues to be effective.
Prevention of Re-ignition
The combination of cooling, chemical reaction suppression, and a protective layer significantly reduces the risk of re-ignition. This is particularly important for:
Flexible Application
LithiumBlack can be used in various fire suppression systems, including mobile units and stationary systems. This allows it to be integrated into both industrial environments and mobile applications.
Lithium-ion fires require a new approach to fire safety. Simply extinguishing flames is not enough. Successful strategies must:
LithiumBlack supports this holistic approach by combining multiple mechanisms of action and is specifically designed for the unique characteristics of lithium-ion systems.
Lithium-ion fires are among the most challenging fire incidents of our time. High energy density, thermal runaway, chain reactions, and toxic smoke gases require specialized solutions. An effective fire protection concept for lithium-ion systems combines:
With a specialized extinguishing agent such as LithiumBlack, fire dynamics can be controlled more quickly, temperatures can be lowered more effectively, and the risk of reignition can be reduced.
Modern energy storage systems require modern fire protection—tailored to their specific physical and chemical characteristics.
