VOGT-CTE - WE DELIVER FLAME RETARDANTS

The increasing prevalence of lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles, solar systems, and many electronic devices brings not only technological advancements but also new challenges in fire safety.

Fires caused by lithium-ion batteries pose unique risks, as conventional fire extinguishers designed for standard fire types are often not adequately effective.

This can delay extinguishment and significantly increase the extent of damage and danger. In response to this issue, “FlameBlock Lithium Black” is introduced as an innovative safety solution specifically developed for lithium-ion battery fires.

Thermal Runaway in Lithium-Ion Batteries

Thermal Runaway refers to an uncontrolled, self-amplifying overheating within a lithium-ion cell. In English, this is known as thermal runaway. An overheated cell generates more heat than it can dissipate. This heat triggers chemical reactions that produce even more heat—leading to a chain reaction.

How does Thermal Runaway occur?

Typical triggers:

  • Internal short circuit
  • Mechanical damage (drop, accident, crushing)
  • Overcharging
  • Manufacturing defect
  • High ambient temperature
  • Moisture ingress

What happens inside the battery?

3. Chemical DecompositionElectrolyte breaks downFormation of flammable gases
4. Oxygen ReleaseCathode material releases oxygenFire can sustain itself

6. IgnitionGases igniteFlames, explosion possible

Why is thermal runaway so dangerous?

Thermal runaway – the thermal escalation of a lithium-ion cell – is particularly dangerous because it is not a “normal” fire. It is a self-reinforcing chemical-thermal reaction that occurs within the battery and is difficult to control from the outside. Once this process begins, the battery generates more heat than it can dissipate. This additional heat further accelerates the chemical reactions – creating a vicious cycle.

A central issue is the extremely high temperatures. While many typical household fires occur at just a few hundred degrees Celsius, a runaway lithium-ion system can reach temperatures of over 800 to 1000 °C. This heat is sufficient to spontaneously ignite surrounding materials, weaken metals, and significantly strain structural integrity.

Additionally, the release of toxic and corrosive smoke gases poses a danger. The decomposition of the electrolyte and other cell components produces irritating and highly toxic gases, among others. In enclosed spaces, these can rapidly reach life-threatening concentrations. At the same time, aggressive residues may settle on surfaces, often causing severe secondary damage to electronics, controls, and metal parts.

Another risk is the potential for re-ignition. Even if a fire appears to be extinguished, there may still be sufficient residual energy within the battery to restart the reaction. This means that an incident is not necessarily over just because flames are no longer visible.

Explosive pressure events are also possible. The formation of large amounts of flammable gases causes a significant increase in pressure within the cell casing. If the casing ruptures, these gases can ignite suddenly – resulting in a flash flame or shock wave.

This situation becomes particularly critical in larger battery systems, such as in home storage or electric vehicles. Here, many cells are arranged closely together. When one cell undergoes thermal runaway, the heat quickly transfers to adjacent cells. This so-called cell-to-cell propagation can convert a local defect into a widespread fire incident.

Firefighting is also challenging. Conventional extinguishing agents can suppress flames but do not automatically halt the chemical processes inside the battery. Intensive cooling is often required, and even after that, the system may need to be monitored for an extended period.

Warning Signs

Thermal runaway rarely occurs without warning signs. There are typical indications that should be taken seriously:

  • The battery becomes unusually hot, even when idle
  • The casing visibly swells
  • Hissing or popping noises are audible
  • A strong, chemical odor is present
  • Smoke begins to develop
  • The device shows sudden performance drops or malfunctions

Such signs indicate internal issues. In these cases, the device should be immediately taken out of service and not charged or used further.

How can thermal runaway be minimized?

The risk can never be entirely eliminated, but it can be greatly minimized. Several factors are essential:

  • Use of high-quality and certified battery systems
  • Installation by a qualified service technician
  • An active battery management system (BMS) that monitors temperature, voltage, and charge state
  • Additional temperature monitoring for larger systems
  • Proper ventilation of the installation area
  • Prevention of mechanical damage
  • Avoid overcharging and only use compatible chargers

Especially for stationary storage, careful planning of the installation site is a crucial safety aspect.

Conclusions

Thermal runaway is the primary danger mechanism in lithium-ion batteries. It is a self-reinforcing thermal-chemical reaction that can lead to extreme temperatures, fire, and toxic smoke in a short period.

With the increasing prevalence of energy storage systems, electric vehicles, and portable batteries, understanding this process becomes increasingly important. Those who understand the mechanisms, recognize early warning signs, and implement appropriate protective measures can significantly reduce the risk – both in private settings and in commercial contexts.
