The increasing prevalence of lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles, solar systems, and many electronic devices brings not only technological advancements but also new challenges in fire safety.
Fires caused by lithium-ion batteries pose unique risks, as conventional fire extinguishers designed for standard fire types are often not adequately effective.
This can delay extinguishment and significantly increase the extent of damage and danger. In response to this issue, “FlameBlock Lithium Black” is introduced as an innovative safety solution specifically developed for lithium-ion battery fires.

Lithium-ion batteries are now an integral part of modern technology – from e-bikes to power tools to electric vehicles. With their high energy density, they also come with specific risks. If there is a defect, damage, or overheating, a phenomenon known as thermal runaway can occur. This is a chemical chain reaction within the battery, during which enormous heat is generated, and the fire continues to fuel itself.
To minimize risks, various materials are used. Two of these are Lithium Black from FIRELAB and the mineral vermiculite. Although both are mentioned in connection with fire protection, they differ fundamentally in structure, mode of action, and areas of application.
During thermal runaway, a battery cell heats up so much that it also heats adjacent cells. These begin to react as well. The result is a self-reinforcing chain reaction characterized by extreme temperatures, flame formation, and the release of flammable and toxic gases. This is precisely where it is determined whether a material merely insulates or actively intervenes.
Lithium Black is a specially formulated fire protection mixture specifically designed for lithium battery fires. It is not only an insulating material but a combination of mineral and chemically active components.
The main functions are:
Practical example: If an e-bike battery ignites in a workshop, Lithium Black can be directly applied to the fire site. The material encases the battery, cools it, and prevents the transfer of heat to adjacent cells. This significantly reduces the likelihood of further escalation. Lithium Black is thus to be understood as an active extinguishing and control agent.
Vermiculite is a naturally occurring silicate mineral. When heated strongly, it expands and forms a lightweight, porous structure with excellent thermal insulation properties.
Typical applications include:
In relation to batteries, vermiculite is often used as a filler and insulation material. It can absorb heat and protect the surrounding area. However, it acts passively. It does not directly influence the chemical reaction within the battery.
Practical example:
A damaged battery is stored in a metal container with vermiculite. The material can absorb any potential heat development and protect surrounding items. However, if an active fire occurs, it is not actively extinguished but rather contained.
Lithium Black has been specifically engineered to address the unique characteristics of lithium battery fires. It actively works by dissipating heat and altering the fire reaction. In contrast, vermiculite serves as a general insulation material. While it can absorb heat, it cannot prevent a thermal chain reaction. To summarize:
Vermiculite is particularly suitable for:
Lithium Black is particularly suitable for:
Lithium battery fires pose a particular challenge as they can self-propagate. Pure isolation often proves insufficient in serious situations. Vermiculite offers good passive protection but is not a specialized extinguishing agent. Lithium Black, however, has been specifically developed for the active control of such fires and directly intervenes in the combustion process. Both materials have their justification—what matters is whether it’s about preventive isolation or active fire suppression.
