GLOSSARY - Extinguishing agents, foam additives, application materials, fire protection agents

TermExplanation
AFFF (Aqueous Film-Forming Foam)A fluorinated foam concentrate that forms a thin aqueous film on burning liquids, preventing oxygen access and suppressing vapour formation. It is now heavily regulated because of PFAS concerns.
Aerosol Fire Suppression SystemA fire suppression technology that generates a solid-particle aerosol to interrupt the chemical chain reaction of combustion. It is frequently used in electrical installations.
Brand ClassesClassification of fires according to the burning material: A for solid materials, B for liquids, C for gases, D for metals, and F for cooking oils and fats. It forms the basis for selecting the appropriate extinguishing agent.
Carbon Dioxide Extinguishing AgentCarbon dioxide used as a fire-extinguishing gas. It works by displacing oxygen and providing limited cooling. It leaves no residue and is suitable for electrical installations.
Compressed Air Foam System (CAFS)A foam-generation system that combines water, foam concentrate, and compressed air. It improves foam adhesion and firefighting efficiency.
Cooling EffectA fire-extinguishing principle based on heat removal, usually through the use of water. It lowers the temperature below the ignition temperature.
DilutionA fire-extinguishing principle based on reducing the concentration of oxygen or combustible gases.
Fire Extinguishing AgentA substance or mixture used to fight fires, such as water, foam, powder, gases, or aerosols.
Firefighting FoamA mixture of water, foam concentrate, and air. It forms a foam blanket that separates the fuel from oxygen and provides cooling.
Fire Protection AgentA general term for substances and systems used to prevent, contain, or extinguish fires.
Flame RetardantA chemical additive incorporated into materials to reduce flammability or delay the spread of fire.
Fluorine-Free Foam (F3)A foam concentrate that does not contain PFAS. It works through a stable foam blanket and cooling rather than film formation.
Gas Fire Suppression SystemAn automatic fire suppression system that uses inert or chemical gases to reduce oxygen levels or interrupt the combustion reaction.
HalonA highly effective extinguishing gas formerly used in fire suppression systems. It has been largely banned because of its ozone-depleting potential.
Ignition SourceAn energy source, such as a spark, open flame, or hot surface, that can initiate combustion.
Ignition TemperatureThe lowest temperature at which a substance ignites without an external ignition source.
Inert GasA non-combustible gas, such as nitrogen or argon, used to reduce the oxygen concentration in a protected space.
InhibitorA substance that interrupts the chemical chain reaction of combustion.
Intumescent CoatingA fire-protective coating that expands when exposed to heat and forms an insulating protective layer.
Lithium Fire Extinguishing AgentA specialised extinguishing agent for fires involving lithium or lithium-ion batteries. Such agents are often based on water mist, gel, or specialised powders.
Metal Fire Extinguishing AgentA specialised powder used to extinguish metal fires classified as Class D fires.
Oxidising AgentA substance that supplies oxygen or can promote combustion. It is an important factor in fire-risk assessment.
Powder Extinguishing AgentFinely ground salts that interrupt the chemical reaction in the flame. They are widely applicable but cause significant contamination and residue.
Smoke SuppressionMeasures or additives used to reduce the production of toxic smoke.
Sprinkler SystemAn automatic water-based fire suppression system with heat-activated sprinkler heads.
Surface-Active Wetting AgentAn additive that reduces the surface tension of water and improves its penetration into solid materials.
Thermal BarrierA material or coating designed to delay heat transfer.
WaterThe most commonly used extinguishing agent. It works primarily through cooling and, to a lesser extent, through smothering.
Water MistA fire suppression technology that uses very fine water droplets to achieve a strong cooling effect while using relatively little water.
